CUTTING CREWS
Cutting crews of Kinsey's day felled and bucked trees, many of great size. Early timber cutting was done with hand tools and "elbow grease." Felling a tree usually involved notching trees to insert a wood platform called a springboard. Springboards were used because the lower portion of the tree was too thick to harvest or presented other problems. It was therefore necessary for the logger to move to a higher location on the tree trunk to place the undercut.
