LEARN BELLINGHAM'S HISTORY ON SUMMER CRUISE

Summer in Bellingham is a time to take to the water. The Whatcom Museum of History & Art invites visitors and residents to gain a nautical perspective on board the annual Bellingham Bay History Cruise.

The Museum’s curator of education, Richard Vanderway, narrates the two-and-a-half-hour sunset excursion, answering such questions as: Where did Bellingham begin? Which were the original four towns that eventually joined together? Who were some of the early characters in local history? How has the bay changed and how do we use this exciting and vital resource today? The tour takes a close up view of parks, business, industry, and neighborhoods along the shoreline, as it travels down waterways and past shipyards and historic points of interest. Harbor seals and water birds are regularly seen.

Each year, Bellingham old timers and newcomers enjoy learning more about the bay and the surrounding area in this relaxed atmosphere.

The Bellingham Bay History Cruise travels on board the 110-foot Puget Sound tour boat Island Caper, which has inside seating for over 100 passengers plus a covered upper deck viewing area. It also has two on-board restrooms and tables for picnic dinners. The cruise leaves from Squalicum Harbor, the Port of Bellingham's boat haven for almost 1,500 fishing and pleasure boats near downtown Bellingham. Bring warm clothing to be prepared for evening breezes and your binoculars to see the sites close up.

Tickets are $25 per person;
$20 per person for Whatcom Museum Members.
Tickets may be purchased at the Whatcom Museum Monday - Thursday, 8 to 5 p.m. Or at Island Mariner Cruises Friday - Sunday. Advanced ticket purchase is recommended as each of the ten cruises often sell out. A discount is available for groups of 15 or more.
