The FIG Studio is a self-guided, self-exploratory play-to-learn, make-and-take space for young inquisitive minds to imagine, create, and innovate. Children and their guardians/parents are invited to explore an assortment of craft-making materials to paint, color, cut, draw, or sculpt an imaginative work of art.  All ages welcome. Included with admission/Members free.

May 2 – 6: Create Animated Cartoons—Bring your favorite cartoon character to life with these easy step-by-step drawing lessons.

May 9 – 20: Clay Lithography Printmaking—Lithography is a printmaking technique in which the print image is etched or chemically ‘cut’ into a flat piece of stone. In this activity you will make a lithograph print using a flat clay surface, onto which you imprint your picture by forming, squeezing, poking, molding, rolling, pinching, and carving it.

May 23 – June 3: Rubbings: Transfer Printmaking—Rubbings represent the oldest printmaking technique in the world. In ancient China, images and words (inscriptions) were carved into bone, bronze, jade, and other hard surfaces to record events or cultural traditions. To preserve these original carvings, known also as reliefs, ‘rubbings’ were made of them. Sheets of paper were applied to the surface, and the transfer was made when the sheet was rubbed with a wax crayon. We can learn a lot about ancient cultures from these rubbings because they left a legacy of ideas including histories, invention ideas, and even mathematical equations! During this lesson, you will learn how to create your own wax crayon rubbing.

June 6 – 17: Foam Printing—Visit the galleries for inspiration from the prints featured in the Crow’s Shadow Institute of Arts at 25 exhibition, then come back to the Studio to create a linocut print using printmaking tools and foam.

June 20 – July 1: Carbon Copies: Transfer Printmaking—How do you turn a pencil, crayons, and two pieces of paper into a carbon copy transfer print? Learn how to use these simple art-making tools to make unique copy prints.
