The FIG Studio is a self-guided, self-exploratory play-to-learn, make-and-take space for young inquisitive minds to imagine, create, and innovate. Children and their guardians/parents are invited to explore an assortment of craft-making materials to paint, color, cut, draw, or sculpt an imaginative work of art.  All ages welcome. Included with admission/Members free.

July 5 15: Japan’s Tanabata Festival—In Japan, the 7th of July commemorates Tanabata (Evening of the Seventh), also known as the Star Festival. This ancient celebration was introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century through a popular folktale, Orihime (Weaving Princess) and Hikoboshi (Boy Star, the Herder of Heaven’s Cows). Learn their story and how it inspired one of Japan’s most beloved festivals, and then create a poem card (tanzaku) to hang on the wishing tree.

July 18 29: Feathers and Brayers—Visit the Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts at 25 exhibition in the Lightcatcher gallery and then come in to the Studio to learn how to make prints with feathers, brayers, and paint.

Aug. 1 12: Pulled String Prints—The unique prints in the Crow’s Shadow exhibition have inspired us to think outside the paper. Come in and make a one-of-a-kind pulled string print.

Aug. 15 – 26: The HeART of Abstract Art—Is it possible to draw feelings? What would the emotions of love, sadness, or anger look like as a painting? Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) believed that abstract colors and forms could be used to express the inner feelings of the artists. Express your changing moods with lines, shapes, and colors to reveal the heART of your art in this fun, colorful activity.

Aug. 29 – 31: My Summer Memory Book—Before it leaves for the fall, capture the summer of 2018 with a memory book that you make and fill with drawings, stories, and more.
