Join the North Cascades Audubon Society for a presentation with guest speakers Bryony Angell and Erica Blake in the Rotunda Room of Old City Hall.
An Introduction to Be Bird Wise
Bryony Angell shares the origin story of the Be Bird Wise initiative in Washington’s agricultural Skagit Valley. Be Bird Wise is an educational media campaign promoting responsible viewing behavior and speaking to recreational visitors to the region, drawn by the presence and abundance of migratory birds across the agricultural landscape.
Bryony writes and speaks about the economy and culture of the world birding scene as it supports wild bird conservation. She contributes to regional and national publications like The Seattle Times, Audubon.org, and The American Birding Association’s Birding Magazine.
DNR Aquatic Reserves Program
Erica Blake will give an introduction to the Aquatic Reserves Program, which brings together partners to inspire science-based stewardship of Washington’s exceptional aquatic resources habitats they work to protect. She will focus on Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve and highlight the vital work of the Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve Citizen Stewardship Committee, including their long-term Cherry Point bird survey.
Erica is a marine ecologist who has worked at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in multiple roles including community science, engagement, and research and monitoring. She is currently focused on aquatic habitat protection at the DNR’s Aquatic Reserves Program. She is also a divemaster who loves teaching people to scuba dive and exploring kelp forests in her spare time. Her favorite animal is the sea cucumber, and one day she hopes to swim alongside a seabird while diving.

The Whatcom Museum acknowledges that we gather on the traditional territory of the Lhaq’temish – Lummi People – and the Nuxwsá7aq – Nooksack People – who have lived in the Coast Salish region from time immemorial. The Museum honors our relationship with all of our Coast Salish neighbors and our shared responsibilities to their homeland where we all reside today.
