Travelogue: Listening for Bridges: Providing Mental Health Care in Bhutan

May 18, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Traditional Bhutanese dancers in front of a temple wearing vibrant yellow, red and multicolored traditional garments.

Join Bellingham Parks & Recreation for guest speaker Dr. Anne Marie Tietjen who will discuss her experiences during 12 months of working as a clinical psychologist at the National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, Bhutan, including the challenges and revelations of developing treatments that bridge healing traditions and reflect the specific realities of rapid Westernization in this deeply Buddhist culture. She and her husband, anthropologist Dr. John Barker, will also share photos of their adventures in Bhutan’s extraordinary cultural and geographic landscapes.

$5 suggested donation/members free

The Whatcom Museum acknowledges that we gather on the traditional territory of the Lhaq’temish – Lummi People – and the Nuxwsá7aq – Nooksack People – who have lived in the Coast Salish region from time immemorial. The Museum honors our relationship with all of our Coast Salish neighbors and our shared responsibilities to their homeland where we all reside today.
