Saturdays with the Symphony
In collaboration with the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra and Bellingham Festival of Music, we are bringing music into the Family Interactive Gallery (FIG)!
Our new summer series, Saturdays with the Symphony, focuses on kid-friendly performances the first Saturday of each month. Our guests will meet a musician, hear them play, and participate in a related art activity. It is a fabulous and fun way to introduce kids to the instruments that make up an orchestra. Saturdays with the Symphony take place in the Family Interactive Gallery inside the Lightcatcher building and are included with admission/free to Museum members.
Sat., June 4, 2 – 3pm, Daniel Bolshoy, Guitar
A guitar in an orchestra?! It sounds a little wild, but guitars don’t usually play with orchestras. This month we’re shaking things up! Meet Bellingham Symphony Orchestra’s world renowned soloist Daniel Bolshoy as he shares about playing the guitar. Bolshoy will share about his guitar, play music, and demonstrate fun guitar techniques.
Sat., July 2, 2 – 3pm, Anne McCafferty, Cello
What do whales and cellos have in common? Join Bellingham Festival of Music cellist Anne McCafferty as she shares about her cello with the book A Symphony of Whales. The book is based on a true story about freeing stranded whales. McAfferty will teach a Russian folksong and invite visitors to sing during the reading.
Sat., Aug. 6, 2 – 3pm, Dawn Posey, Violin
Today, learn about women composers with Bellingham Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Dawn Posey. Posey will share about leading the orchestra and her violin. In addition, she will play some amazing pieces by women composers. As the leader of the string section and orchestra, she will share with kids about leadership opportunities in the orchestra.
