BELLINGHAM HOUSES : ARTS & CRAFTS ERA

Arts & Crafts in Bellingham The American Arts & Crafts Movement had a profound influence on residential architecture in Bellingham during the first two decades of the 20th century. An Arts & Crafts aesthetic, emphasizing simplicity, proportion and skilled construction, can be found throughout Bellingham's older neighborhoods. It's expressed in dwellings that range from a shingle weaver's humble house in the York Addition to the majestic Roeder Home in Broadway Park. Its inspiration is visible in the supremacy of the classic Craftsman style, but also evoked in bungalows and Four Squares, in Tudor Revival or "English style" houses, in gambrel roofed "Dutch" cottages, and even in late Folk Victorian transitional designs. Celebrating honest craftsmanship and native materials came naturally to Bellingham, a city with an abundance of exceptional lumber and accomplished carpenters.
