Sonja Blomdahl began creating glass works at the Massachusetts College of Art under the instruction of noted glass sculptor Dan Dailey. After graduating, the artist traveled to Sweden to study at the Orrefors Glass School, where she was influenced by the Swedish style of unadorned surfaces and clean, crisp lines.

She also studied with the Venetian glass master, Checco Ongaro, who taught her the incalmo or "double—bubble" technique, in which two pieces of blown glass are joined together to form a single vessel. The artist uses this technique in many of her works, including the two pieces displayed in this gallery. Blomdahl states, "I want the colors to glow and react." Indeed, her vessels reflect and catch light in a variety of ways, evoking a sense of harmony and warmth.

Blomdahl served as a teaching assistant at the Pilchuck School of Glass in Stanwood, Washington, in 1985, returning in 2002 and 2009. Today she works in her Seattle glass blowing studio and teaches at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle.
