Laminated wood
Gift of the artist in Honor of Jackie & Carl Meurk

Doris Chase was fascinated by circles and their holistic connotation. She translated these into laminated wood sculptures and public artworks in the 1960s. As a pioneering computer, film, and video artist in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s, she often reinterpreted her three—dimensional forms and fused them with choreographic movements to create what she called "video dance." Chase envisioned art as a "bridge to awareness," encouraging viewers to rearrange and activate her kinetic works. The artist's passion for change motivated her diverse achievements. Toward the end of her career, Chase wrote and directed a series of theatrical productions that centered on monologues by women. Based on the "experiences that shape a woman's life," these works were screened nationally.
