Description:
Untitled, 1955—1959
Watercolor on paper
Gift of Ron Kellen, 2009.50.15
Helmi painted a number of shore birds, ranging in scale from this single sandpiper to a large composition with multiple birds studied from a variety of angles. She may have been inspired by the works of Morris Graves (1910—2001), who infused his birds with a mystical aura. Helmi felt close to Graves and corresponded with him throughout her life.
Helmi loved the outdoors. In a letter to her friend Kit Tucker, Helmi reminisced about carving linoleum blocks by the sea shore during the summer as the sun made the material more supple.
