HELMI JUVONEN : SYMBOL, MYTH, FANTASY
ID#:
1979.0095.000005
Description:
Northwest Coast Indian Mask, 1951—1952
Linocut on paper
Gift of Wesley Wehr, 1979.95.5

Helmi's monochromatic interpretation of Kumugwe' captures the power of its original maker.

The Kwakwaka'wakw believe that Kumugwe', Chief of the Sea, presides over all sea creatures. Living in his underwater home built of copper, he symbolizes great wealth and people seek his power. In ceremonial dances, the masked Kumugwe' performer mimics the motion of the ebb and flow of waves. The humanoid mask contains references to the ocean, including wave—like designs.
