HELMI JUVONEN : SYMBOL, MYTH, FANTASY
ID#:
1984.0018.000012
Description:
Imaginative Perception, 1949—1950
Linoleum block
Gift of Helmi Juvonen and Wesley Wehr, 1984.18.11

In Imaginative Perception, Helmi creates an original composition inspired by Northwest aboriginal house screens, cedar boxes, and totem poles. The inscribed title suggests the artist's blending of documentation and fantasy. She titled this same work, Stylistic Form, during another print making session.

The Whatcom Museum owns a large number of Helmi's linoleum blocks, which are beautiful in their own right and reveal the artist's carving skills.
