At the Oakhurst Convalescent Home, Helmi asked a friend to bring her H. Thomas Cain's Petroglyphs of Central Washington (1950). Many of the artist's paintings of petroglyphs and pictographs were inspired by cryptic diagrams illustrated in this book. Helmi titled her paintings after the site names described by the author.
