In contrast to her more realistically drawn sandpipers, Helmi painted a whole series of rainbow—colored birds in a style that she called "peasant design."
Heart—shaped forms as well as droplet brushstrokes feature prominently. These characteristics reflect a Scandinavian folk art style with which this artist of Finnish descent would have been familiar.
