HELMI JUVONEN : SYMBOL, MYTH, FANTASY
ID#:
2009.0050.000016
Description:
Untitled, 1955—1959
Gouache and linocut on salvaged page from Etude magazine
Gift of Ron Kellen, 2009.50.16

This unusual work provides an intimate look into Helmi's state of mind at this time as well as her innovative techniques. The artist appears to have blackened a magazine page, unveiling only the eyes of a photographic portrait and the word "Mark." She then prints an early linocut, Symbolic Realism, on top and similarly frames the composition. Finally, Helmi drips and splatters white paint in a manner reminiscent of the famous action painter, Jackson Pollack. The result: an enigmatic work and innovative use of mixed—media.

This work also reflects Helmi's complicated obsession with the artist Mark Tobey, who is referenced here. She poked fun at him in many paintings, but also believed that they were destined to marry, despite his homosexuality.
