ID#:

Description:
Spegpegud (Winter Dance Time), 1946—1947
Lithograph on paper
Gift of Dr. Ulrich & Stella Fritzsche, 1982.88.2

In 1946, Helmi visited La Conner, Washington, where she experienced winter ceremonial dances at the Swinomish smokehouse. The artist began attending these events as early as 1940.

Tribes from the region would congregate in La Conner and enact rituals, such as the magic sticks, dancing boards, and the spirit dance pictured in this print. The dancing figure must be Lummi as he wears a headdress made of human hair and wooden paddles attached to his regalia.
